If you have an associate who does this, feel validated. It destroys you after awhile.

There are people out there -- a whole lot of them -- who lack the ability to feel remorse and are effectively disconnected from what we would call "reality". They truly believe the unfactual statements that they say, when they say them.

It is also an extremely effective method for controlling people. People get invested in believing the liar. When you call the liar out on a total lie, and show facts that it is clearly a lie, people will still believe him or her. (And it can be both men and women.) You are then attacked for maligning the liar with the truth. Politicians use this very effectively, tying it to the fact the partisans or true believers get a burst of happiness when they reject facts for their previous belief.

It's just the way things are. The trick is to fight them ruthlessly. They can change but it is unlikely.

Gaslighting -- interesting article over the link. I don't know whether to feel validated by it or sucked into further paranoia.
